Advertising in 1985. William Cook was the largest advertising agency in
the southeast and projects worked on included international transportation
companies, regional financial institutions and large automotive clients. Kurtis
formally opened his studio in 1986, broadening his agency freelance client
base and providing “desk top publishing” services for Jacksonville small
business. In 1987 Kurtis launched SWELL Magazine, an internationally
distributed surfing magazine and one of the region’s first digitally produced
magazines. During the three-year publishing span, SWELL helped ignite the
emerging east coast surfing industry. He has illustrated several books, and
recently wrote, illustrated and self-published “Stephen And The SEE Gull —
Discover The Beach,” a hardbound children’s discovery book highlighting
Kurtis is passionate about “The Beaches.” He has lived, worked, and raised
two daughters in Jacksonville Beach with his wife, Margaret. Active in a variety
of community-based organizations, Kurtis dedicates his talent to improving
the quality of life for residents and visitors. In 2013, Kurtis founded Deck
The Chairs, a non-profit dedicated to promoting arts and cultural diversity
through the decoration of lifeguard chairs in downtown Jacksonville Beach.
The organization raises needed funds for the Volunteer Life Saving Corps.
Kurtis is currently Executive Director of DTC and works year-round promoting
local business and the arts.
